Mathematics Curriculum Intent, Implementation and Impact statement
Intention (Why do we teach what we teach ?)
We have designed our Mathematics curriculum so that our learners:
- Develop an enjoyment and enthusiasm for mathematics that will stay with them throughout their lives
- Develop their mathematical confidence and competence
- Understand and develop their use of mathematical vocabulary and terminology to describe, discuss, examine, hypothesise and justify
- Understand and develop mathematical fluency as an essential life-skill and know that this is a pre-requisite to being able to reason and solve problems mathematically
- Are enabled to use concrete resources and pictorial representations to answer abstract calculations and questions
- Make connections with prior learning and use this to solve increasingly sophisticated mathematical problems
Implementation (How do we teach it ?)
Our Mathematics curriculum is taught:
- Using White Rose Maths and Herts Essentials, supplemented by resources from Classroom Secrets and Maths on Target
- So that it provides breadth and balance, is relevant and engaging and is differentiated to match the needs and abilities of all of our children
- Using the concrete-pictorial-abstract approach to develop a solid understanding of mathematical concepts
- So that fluency and reasoning/problem solving are an integral part of each daily maths session
- So that children develop a range of progressive mathematical strategies, in-line with our Calculation Policy
- So that mathematical fluency is developed through use of dedicated fluency sessions which are delivered outside of and in addition to the daily maths lessons
- To develop children’s knowledge and understanding of explicit mathematical vocabulary, which can be used and applied in context
- Misconceptions can be addressed through either additional teaching within the lesson, via verbal feedback or through targeted intervention (same day or via a weekly timetabled session)
- By supplementing what is taught in school by the use of Numbots in KS1, and Mathletics and TT RockStars in KS2
Impact (What has been the impact and how do we know?)
The impact of the Mathematics curriculum at Putteridge Primary can be seen through:
- Our children’s enjoyment of mathematics
- Our children developing a range of efficient and accurate skills that can be used to calculate efficiently and effectively
- Our children understand mathematics rather than ‘just do’, helping them identify when answers do not make mathematical sense
- Our children are able to apply calculation skills and understanding of other mathematical areas to become confident and resilient problem solvers, who have the ability to reason and articulate their ideas mathematically
- Our children will have a wide range of mathematical vocabulary which they use to justify, reason and explain their answers and responses
- The work evidenced in the children’s books and on display across the school
- The percentage of children working at Expected level or greater across the school as shown on Target Tracker
- The percentage of children who attain the Expected standard in the Year 4 Multiplication Check
- The percentage of children working at Expected level or greater at the end of Year 2 and Year 6, when compared to local and national outcomes
